The men who were allegedly working on a structure that was still in the foundation were reportedly encroaching on the fence of a neighboring structure when a portion of it collapsed on them.

The injured had been transferred to the hospital, according to Alhaji Abbas Idriss, Director General of the Federal Capital Territory FCT Emergency Management Agency FEMA, who confirmed the occurrence over the phone.

He explained, “Between 10 and 11 am, we received a distress call informing us that a building in Wuse 2 had collapsed, and we immediately dispatched our rescue team to the area. As they arrived, they saw that the artisans who were nearby were injured by a wall. Six persons have been extracted from the rubble thus far; two of them suffered fatal injuries, while four others are now being treated in hospitals. 2 persons passed away.

“The reason why the wall fell on them is because the developer encroached into another structure, namely the UBA building.”

Idriss clarified that there was no evidence of the use of subpar materials when it came to efforts to prevent similar events in the future, but his organization will collaborate with others to keep raising public awareness.

The best we can do, he said, is to keep raising awareness among the populace and including other important stakeholders who can grant approvals and keep an eye on progress.
