The police in Enugu State have detained two alleged female gang members of a ring that traffics and steals children.
Also saved by the police were Destiny Okechukwu, a one-year-old boy, and Ogechi Eneh, a four-year-old girl.
State Police Public Relations Officer Daniel Ndukwe (DSP), who confirmed this Tuesday morning, said the operation was carried out by Police Operatives operating in Enugu State Command’s SWAT team who acted on reliable intelligence.
The two female suspects who had been detained were identified as Miracle Orji, 24, and Blessing Ani, 34.
According to a preliminary inquiry, Miracle Orji stole on March 24, 2023, and was on the run with Ogechi Edeh when she was stopped and taken into custody with the help of locals at Ameke-Oduma Village in Aninri Local Government Area.
Blessing Ani was apprehended after she confessed, and she had been waiting to accept the youngster and continue trafficking it near the Shoprite Mall in Enugu.
Blessing Ani, for her part, admitted to being involved in child trafficking since 2017 and led the operatives to Abuja, where Destiny Okechukwu, a victim who had been sold with forged documents and given the new name Chibuike, was rescued.
A spokeswoman for the State Police assured that aggressive investigative activities were on track to apprehend further syndicate members.
He stated that after the case’s investigation was over, the two female suspects would be arraigned in court.
