WHAT OCCURED? As things stand, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s contract with Paris Saint-Germain is about to expire, and he is moving closer to free agency. Despite long-running discussions about a renewal, no additional time has been agreed upon for that agreement.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: After heading directly down the tunnel at the conclusion of his last club match, questions have been raised about how committed Messi is to the PSG cause. Messi enjoyed World Cup victory with Argentina in Qatar 2022.
Furthermore, according to Sport, only the Ligue 1 powerhouses have made a formal offer to Messi, despite their desire to keep him for at least another year. There have been rumors that the MLS and Saudi Arabia are interested in the erratic South American, but for the time being such rumors are just that—rumors.
THEN WHAT? After witnessing Messi break numerous records in Catalunya, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has kept the door open for him at Camp Nou, but the Blaugrana’s financial woes are well known, and they have a number of issues to address in order to compete with PSG for the most sought-after of signatures.
