Sulieman Abubakar, a scavenger, was given a 21-month prison term by an area court in Abuja on Thursday for stealing an MP3 speaker valued N5,000.
The police accused 28-year-old Abubakar of burglary, stealing, and criminal trespass.
The Area Court Judge Saminu Suleiman offered the convict the choice of an N30,000 fine when delivering the verdict.
The defendant had previously admitted guilt and begged the court for mercy.
Olanipekun Babajide, the prosecution, further informed the court that Abdulrahman Myheiminu, the complainant from Dawaki, Abuja, reported the incident to the Zuba police station on February 5.
According to Babajide, the inmate shattered the complainant’s window, which was worth N80,000, while trespassing into his home.
The defendant, he claimed, delivered a confessional statement to the police over the course of their inquiry, admitting to the crime.
