Seyi Makinde, the PDP candidate for governor of Oyo State, was proclaimed the victor of the state’s governorship election on Sunday by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Adebayo Adelabu of the Accord Party received 38,357 votes, while Teslim Folarin of the All Progressive Congress received 256,685 votes, giving Seyi Makinde a victory margin of 563,756 votes.
The state’s returning officer, Olusola Kehinde, pronounced Seyi Makinde the victor of the election after she met all legal requirements.
Folarin finished in second place by winning two local governments, Irepo and Ore-lope, while Makinde won 31 of the state’s 33 local government districts.
Makinde, who was running for re-election on Saturday, faced off against Adebayo Adelabu of the Accord Party, a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and three-term senator Folarin.

According to the results of the 33 local governments in the South-West states, Makinde received 563,756 votes, defeating his nearest competitor who received 256,685.
Seyi Makinde Abiodun of the PDP, having satisfied the legal condition, is hereby pronounced the winner and is returned elected by the Returning Officer, Prof Adebayo Simeon on this day, March 19, 2023, according to INEC’s state returning officer, Prof Adebayo Simeon.

Makinde was the last member of the PDP G5 or Integrity Group to hold elections before Saturday.
The eight-year-old governors of Abia, Enugu, and Benue, Okezie Ikpeazu, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and Samuel Ortom, have all already lost their bids for the Senate, while Nyesom Wike, who is serving his second term as governor of the Rivers, chose not to run for any elected position.
Before the election on March 18, Seyi Makinde was the center of attention after three of his compatriots were defeated. Nonetheless, with his proclamation as the winner by INEC, Seyi Makinde survived the defeat experienced by other G5 members.
On Saturday, elections for governor were held in 28 of Nigeria’s 36 states. A court case compelled INEC to bring the gubernatorial and state assembly elections forward, which resulted in them taking place a week later than originally planned.
Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Osun, and Ondo are eight of the 36 states that have “off-season” governorship elections because of legal disputes and court rulings.
The 28 states that held governorship elections on March 18 are Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Enugu, Gombe, Jigawa, Katsina, Kebbi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara.
17 outgoing governors, who were inaugurated on May 29, 2015, are in the final weeks of their constitutional two-term limits of eight years, while 11 serving governors, including Seyi Makinde, sought reelection.
