The 29-year-old accepted a pay cut to leave west London and re-join Inter Milan on a season-long loan in the summer after a falling out with Thomas Tuchel.
According to reports, the Blues assured Inter that he might stay for another year, but the Italian powerhouses are becoming less willing to pay his salaries after a season marred by injuries.
He said: “Although he is our player, he is on loan and an Inter Milan player. I think it is important he finishes that off. Then we have a decision to make in the summer.
“He is someone I admire a lot, I like a lot but again it is something to think about over the summer.”
Potter stated that he might use the £100 million previous club record signing before a home game against Aston Villa.
